Solar Goes Mainstream at Emmy Awards, JinkoSolar Sponsors NFL

Celebrites at the Emmy Awards walked on the red carpet under the shading of a solar canopy, which provided onsite power for the event.

The 50 kilowatt system, made with SolarWorld (SWV.DE) panels, was visible throughout the "Countdown to the Emmy’s" pre-show outside the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, California.

The Emmy’s, wich draw about 12 million television viewers, provided another major opportunity for Americans to see first-hand the viability of solar technology.

The solar system was part of FOX’s "Green it. Mean it" Campaign. Other sustainable features at the Emmy’s included carpet manufactured from recycled materials, energy-efficient lighting, and locally sourced and organically grown food.

SolarWorld and Fox are donating the solar panels to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles after the show. The panels will be divided and installed at 10-20 households throughout greater Los Angeles.

Fox is well known for denying the reality of climate change and pushing hard for continued use of fossil fuels at the expense of renewable energy.

NFL 49ers Backed by Solar

Another major touchstone in US popular culture – the National Football League – is also going solar this year.

China’s JinkoSolar (NYSE: JKS) will serve as the exclusive solar sponsor for the San Francisco 49ers during the 2011-2012 NFL season.

Under the terms of the agreement, JinkoSolar will display its signage in a variety of locations at the team’s stadium, Candlestick Park, including the scoreboard, LED message boards and a prominent ribbon panel. JinkoSolar will also have exclusive branding rights to Gate F in Candlestick Park, which will be known as "JinkoSolar Gate" for the duration of the season.

Earlier this year the Seattle Seahawks announced plans to build the largest solar installation in Washington State at Qwest Field, and the Washington Redskins added 2 megawatts (MW) of solar canopy to shade 850 parking spaces outside FedExField.
