The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched a web tool designed to help individuals and institutional purchasers find Energy Star electronics, appliances, and WaterSense products that save energy and water.
There’s also information about cleaning products that are safer for the environment and people’s health. These products bear the EPA Design for the Environment (DfE) label.
Manufacturers will find information on standards and criteria for designing greener products. Businesses that want their products certified can search by product category to find EPA’s performance specs for that product.
"By purchasing greener products, people can help reduce air pollution, conserve water and energy, minimize waste and protect their children and families from exposure to toxic chemicals, while also creating green jobs," says Steve Owens, assistant administrator of EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, "Pollution Prevention is good for our health, our environment and our economy."
Here’s the website:
I don’t think the EPA should be in the product website business. Better to publish the data so that private industry can consume the data on their own websites.
I think it is a great idea. I, personally, have no fear of government when it does the right thing. If there is a standard rating system, why not inform the public about which companies comply or excel?
One thing has been proven, without pressure, companies will forfeit public safety for prophits more often than not.
