More than 900 companies participated in Colorado’s Bike to Work challenge this year.
Now in its 16th year, Colorado Bike to Work Day is the highlight of Colorado Bike Month drawing cyclists from employers like Navigant Energy, Vail Resorts, PricewaterhouseCoopers (Denver), IHS, Abound Solar, the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), and outdoor gear company Osprey Packs.
Of 38 potential riders at Osprey’s headquarters in Cortez, Colorado, 32 rode their bikes to work, pedaling a total of 425 miles and eliminating 594 pounds of carbon (based upon 20 miles per gallon and 28 pounds of carbon for every gallon of gas burned).
Additionally, 23 Osprey employees took the Bike to Work Pledge, committing to 15 non-motorized commutes between June 22 and September 7, 2011.
The company’s committment to green initiatives is one reason it was named on Outside magazine’s "Best Places to Work" list for the fifth straight year – the only company to receive such repeated recognition.
"Bike to Work Day is a tradition for Osprey, and it goes glove-in-glove with our year-round Sustainable Transportation Initiative, which provides cash incentives for team members who choose to walk, bike or use other non-motorized means for their daily commute," says Sam Mix, Osprey outdoor marketing manager. "At Osprey, leaving your car at home isn’t just a challenge for one day- it’s something we encourage year round."
The University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus had the most first-time participants, and, not surprisingly, Bicycle Colorado won the award for 100% employee participation.
