Airlines Recognized As Green Supply Chain Partners

The cargo divisions of Continental, Delta and Lufthansa have been recognized for ongoing commitments to sustainability in their daily operations by Inbound Logistics magazine.

Continental’s Eco-Skies initiative is reducing emissions and improving aircraft fuel efficiency. Since 1997, fleet modernization efforts have reduced emissions 35%, or about 1.3 million tons. The airline has also addressed noise pollution and handling and disposal of toxic substances.

Delta’s fuel efficiency is up 35% since 2000 thanks to improvements in technology, operating procedures and maintenance.

In 2007, it became the first US airline to establish a carbon-offset program. And as a member of the SkyTeam air alliance, Delta adopted the organization’s social responsibility standard, which includes implementing best available technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution.

Lufthansa has been focusing on using lighter materials and bio-kerosene. In March 2011, Lufthansa Cargo held its second annual Cargo Climate Care Conference in Frankfurt to develop innovative solutions for the logistics sector’s climate balance.

Other well-known brands that were also acknowledged include FedEx, DHL, Ryder and JB Hunt.

Although the airline industry generally gets very poor marks for recycling passenger waste, Delta is the best and Continental is in the top 10.
