Q-Cells’ (QCE.DE) North American subsidiary has signed an 83- megawatts solar cell supply agreement with SunPower Corp. (Nasdaq: SPWRA, SPWRB).
Q-Cells’ solar cells will be used in SunPower panels for select commercial and utility scale solar projects, the company said.
Q-Cells is considering opening manufacturing facilities in North America, according to a Bloomberg story.
SunPower, which is based in California, but produces most of its panels abroad, is currently building its first manufacturing facility in the U.S., in California.
Marc van Gerven, CEO of Q-Cells North America, said the U.S. solar market is expanding. The company plans to begin selling its own branded CIGS solar modules in the U.S. in the second half of 2012.
"Since 2005, the solar industry has grown more than 601% per anum and is expected to expand another 342 gigawatts by 2015, according to industry experts,” said Van Gerven said.
