The continuing resolution (HR 1) passed by the U.S. House on February 19 is the most anti-environment, anti-wildlife legislation ever, according to leading environmental groups ranging from the Union of Concerned Scientists to Defenders of Wildlife. And the Senate could approve the bill this week.
We’ve reported on the huge number of amendments that eliminate funding and block protection of everything from toxic chemicals to protecting our water supplies, and we’ve reported on the deep cuts to energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.
It’s just as bad for wildlife. It would completely eliminate endangered species status for wolves, marking the first time politics rather than science would determine whether a species needs protection. It would decimate conservation funding, resulting in dirtier air and water, while effectively shuttering national wildlife refuges for lack of funding.
The environmental community urges people to call their senators and object to the bills provisions to…
- Eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves
- Prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating emissions that cause climate change that now threaten polar bears and walruses
- Slash funding for national wildlife refuges and the essential Land and Water Conservation Fund, which protect wildlife habitat across the country
- Complicate enforcement of the Clean Water Act that protects drinking water and essential waters for aquatic wildlife.
You can call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your senators. If you are calling after 5 p.m. Eastern Time, you can leave a message.
