The US Defense Dept is required to buy American-made solar products, thanks to a little-noticed "Buy American" provision that made it through the House and Senate during the 2010 lame duck session.
The provision was included in the military authorization law, which was recently signed by President Obama.
China has quickly grown to the world’s largest solar panel producer over the past two years. The US only supplies $1.6 billion of the world’s $29 billion solar market.
The provision was written carefully to avoid China from being able to take the US to task regarding free trade rules of the World Trade Organization.
