REC Enters U.S. Joint Venture for Solar Development

Norway-based Renewable Energy Corporation ASA (REC.OL) and Summit Power Group of Seattle, WA have jointly established NorthLight Power, a project development company focused on the development of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in the Western U.S.

NorthLight Power expands on Summit Power’s track record of developing more than 7,000 MW of electric power plants in the US, as well as REC’s solar PV manufacturing expertise. REC is currently ramping up one of the world’s largest integrated solar production facilities in Singapore.

NorthLight will cover the full range of project development activities such as securing suitable sites, permitting, establishing PPA contracts, grid interconnection, EPC management, and arranging project financing.

NorthLight Power recently has, through its affiliate North Star Solar, LLC, signed a 60-megawatt (ac) solar power purchase agreement (PPA) with Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E). The North Star solar power plant will be constructed with solar modules manufactured by REC, and is scheduled to be operational in 2013. Implementation of the project is subject to approval by the California Public Utilities Commission.

REC is among the world’s largest producers of polysilicon and wafers for solar applications, and a rapidly growing manufacturer of solar cells and modules. REC is also engaged in project development activities in selected PV segments.

Summit Power Group, Inc. says its has over 7,000 MW of electric power plants in operation, and over 1,000 MW under development or under construction.
