An Oregon manufacturer of small wind turbines is co-opting the business model that is proving successful for residential solar installations.
Rather than owning the renewable energy equipment, a customer with an ideal site can host the electricity producing hardware, and purchase the output for a set price that is lower than standard market rates.
Xzeres is pursuing this wind-as-a-service model with its 10-kilowatt turbine. And if the site is productive, ownership of the turbine eventually reverts to the customer, according to a New York Times blog.
