Motorola Acquires Home Energy Management Platform

Motorola Mobility, Inc., a subsidiary of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), has signed an agreement to acquire 4Home, Inc., a developer of home energy management software.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the year.

In addition to home energy management, 4Home’s ControlPoint platform also provides home security and monitoring, and media management. The platform uses open standards that allow partners to develop new services for consumers that utilize the growing number of connected devices in the home.

The deal extends a recent trend of acquisitions and collaborations between large corporations and startups that provide a pathway to the growing markets for "smart" grids and homes. 

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) recenlty joined Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) in funding software company Consert. AT&T (NYSE: T) is collaborating with Current Group. And GE (NYSE: GE) has invested in Tendril, among others. ADT, Comcast, Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) have all pitched in cash for iControl.
