Watch 'The Story of Electronics'

A new animated film by the creators of The Story of Stuff debuted today in an effort to educate consumers about the detrimental effects of electronics that are "designed for the dump."

The Story of Electronics champions extended producer responsibility or product takeback requirements for electronics companies to deal with outdated and broken electronic products. Such requirements would encourage companies to abandon the practice of planned obsolescence and shift to products that could be easily updated without being thrown away.

Hosted by Annie Leonard, creator of The Story of Stuff, the new 8-minute movie also discusses the use of toxic chemcials in the production of electronics and the growing health and environmental crisis in third world countries, where e-waste is being dumped for processing under dangerous conditions.

Watch the film, and pass it along before holiday shopping begins.

    Brilliant video.
What puzzles me is that there is an implication that development will stop. Does my wife want to repair her twin tub, do I want to repair my PC CRT display? No. I want the latest fastest high resolution low energy one. So how does that fit in with repairability?
Or are we talking about extending the life time a few years only, or are we looking for very clever design to allow for miniaturisation and performance improvement?
Whatever else, the big company greed for profit will play to the man in the street’s greed for better stuff.
Is there a way out or must we play out the dianasour again?
