Seventh Generation announced that it is using 90% recycled plastic content in three of its product bottles–an industry first.
The announcement was part of the 2009 Corporate Consciousness Report for the company, which makes non-toxic household and personal care products.
In another industry first, the report is published as a website, designed to allow readers to search the report and leave comments.
Other highlights in the report include the purchase of sustainable palm oil credits; launching a line of botanical disinfecting cleaners; and eliminating traces of 1,4-dioxane byproducts from its dish liquid and laundry detergents.
These results are complemented by a set of new company-wide sustainability goals, which call on the company to reduce its virgin plastic use by 80% over the next 5 years, obtain 100% of its palm oil from sustainable sources by 2012, and ensure that all of the materials and ingredients used in its products come from renewable plant and mineral sources that ensure compostability and/or biodegradability in marine environments.
The report also tracks the company’s progress on a centerpiece series of energy and climate goals. This includes a 7% reduction in carbon emissions and a 13% decrease in employee carbon footprints between 2005 and 2009.
Future goals involve lowering packaging and product solid waste by 25%, and deploying a 100% renewable electricity supply at Seventh Generation’s corporate headquarters.
