The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is pushing ahead with progressive reforms, despite midterm elections that swung to the right, according to a New York Times story.
FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff says he is moving forward with initiatives to encourage energy conservation and promote transmission for renewable power.
"Quite frankly, FERC is sort of operating independently of the electoral process," Wellinghoff told the NY Times. "We’ve been acting under our statutory federal authority to move forward toward what I see as our responsibilities under the Federal Power Act, and that is to ensure rates are just and reasonable. And part of that I see as improving efficiency and competition in the markets, and incorporating new resources into the markets, including renewables and the demand side.
The two-pronged agenda is represented in notices of proposed rulemaking (NOPRs) the FERC expects to complete next year.
