Energy, Forests On Agenda for Obama's Asia Trip

U.S. President Barack Obama will visit India and Indonesia for the first time as chief executive in the week ahead.

Both countries are key to the future of international climate change negotiations. India, like China, has a large population and fast-growing demand for energy. Indonesia, like Brazil, has some of the largest tropical forests, necessary for carbon sequestration. However, deforestation is rampant in the country, as forests are being cleared to make way for lucrative palm oil plantations.

The World Resources Institute says three broad areas of discussion are crucial when Obama meets with India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh:

  1. Clean energy and technology
  2. Adaptation
  3. A strong framework for international cooperation

In Indonesia, Obama is likely to announce funding to assist forest conservation and climate change programs under the Millennium Challenge Corporation.
