Residents of the island were enthusiastic about the construction of the wind turbines until they were turned on. “In the first 10 minutes, our jaws dropped to the ground,” Mr. Lindgren told the NY Times. “Nobody in the area could believe it. They were so loud.”
Recent studies report that noise from wind turbines has no harmful psychological effects and proximity to wind farms does not decrease property value. But anecdotal evidence may be building to the contrary.
However, noise complaints are less likely in areas where their is other ambient background noise, the story suggests. And of the 250 new wind farms commissioned in the last two years only about a dozen have triggered significant noise complaints.
