IBM (NYSE: IBM) will serve as the systems integrator for NV Energy’s (NYSE: NVE) planned smart grid project, which received $138 million in stimulus funds from the U.S. Department of Energy
IBM will provide systems integration, system architecture, business process and business analytics. In addition, NV Energy will use IBM software products to integrate new advanced metering, meter data management, and demand response systems with existing applications including customer and geographic information systems.
IBM is also working with NV Energy to communicate consumer benefits of smart grids, referred to as Advanced Service Delivery in Nevada. Educating consumers on the benefits of managing their energy use is seen by many in the industry as a crucial step for encouraging the adoption of smart grid technologies.
IBM is one of a growing number of established computing and technology companies working to gain a share of the large smart grid market. Others include Cisco Systems (CSCO), Siemens (NYSE: SI) and cellular carriers like Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Sprint (NYSE: S).
IBM says it is involved in more than 150 Smart Grid projects in mature and emerging markets.
