There is much debate as to whether or not China is serious about cutting its greenhouse gas emissions. But the fact remains that the nation’s supercharged growth is causing its emissions levels to rocket past suggested safe targets.
Last year the International Energy Agency (IEA) proposed a target for the nation’s emissions to peak in 2020 and decline thereafter to avoid the worst effects of global climate change.
But analysis released by BP (NYSE: BP) shows that China will hit that target of 8.4 billion tons of CO2 per year in a matter of months.
China will host United Nations climate negotiations for the first time next week. Reuters published an article that looks at China’s negotiating stance in light of its explosive growth and five-year development plan for reducing energy intensitiy and increasing renewable power. (link below)
