Grid Net, Landis+Gyr To Utilize Sprint 4G Network for Smart Grid

Two smart grid companies announced that their technologies will be compatible with Sprint’s (NYSE: S) 4G wireless network. Sprint is the first national wireless carrier to launch a 4G network in the U.S, which is considered the next wave in wireless communications technology.

Grid Net announced it is collaborating with Sprint to deliver a Smart Grid solution using Grid Net’s software platforms to connect smart meters and smart grid routers via the Sprint 4G network.

Grid Net software platforms are designed to integrate substation automation, distribution automation, smart meters, demand response, and load management with electric vehicles, buildings, and homes to increase grid reliability, energy efficiency, and renewable energy use.

Sprint also will explore embedded WiMAX connectivity into Smart Meters and Smart Grid Routers with Grid Net.

In a separate release, Landis+Gyr said it has qualified the Sprint 4G network as a compatible communications vehicle to interface with the Gridstream smart grid solution for advanced metering, grid automation and personal energy management.

"Sprint’s technology for connecting the smart grid network to the utility’s core infrastructure will allow for rapid deployment in areas where Sprint 4G service has been established," said Gina Garner, director of the Gridstream RF platform.

The tie in with Landis+Gyr is not a big surprise, because last month the company signed a deal to license Grid Net’s software to embed in its smart meters.

Other wireless carriers are also involved in providing smart grid communications. Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is likely to team up with Raleigh-based Consert Inc., in which it has invested. AT&T provides 3G wireless communication services to Silver SpringNetworks’ utility customers in the U.S. And they are working with Current Group to combine smart grid offerings as well.
