Fifteen European nations on Friday agreed for the first time to set-up fishing-free zones in international waters of the North-East Atlantic Ocean.
Environmental ministers from the countries said they will seek cooperation from the U.S. and Canada to protect the areas, as well as recognition from the United Nations.
Protection for the region–covering a total of 110,000 square miles–could extend from fishing to drilling or mining in the seabed, and even restrictions on shipping.
"This is a historic step," Norwegian Environment Minister Erik Solheim told Reuters. "We will try to inspire other nations to do the same, like in the Indian ocean, the Pacific and other oceans."
