A recent New York Times article examines the work of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (aka ARP-E).
The agency has a budget of $400 million to fund high-risk projects that have game-changing potential for the creation, storage and use of power.
Following the Gulf Oil Spill, there is more pressure to move the U.S. away from oil as a transportation fuel. The article looks at some of the projects funded to create stronger, lighter batteries and ultracapacitors for electric vehicles (FastCap Systems) and to produce cheaper cellulosic biofuels (Agrivida).
