The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a case study highlighting a partenership with SMUD, Solar Power, Inc. (SPI) and Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, that led to the installation of
one of the largest single-site industrial solar farms in the country.
The study documents the key factors, lessons learned and required steps that led to the rapid, successful restoration of Aerojet land to beneficial use as an energy-producing environmental asset.
Aerojet and its partners designed and installed the fully operational six-megawatt (MW) solar farm that spans across 40 acres of Aerojet’s land. The solar array now powers portions of the company’s existing groundwater remediation efforts, provides existing power for Aerojet’s internal operations, and reduces the company’s carbon footprint.
The EPA and other state regulatory agencies supported the partnership with land evaluations, remedial consultation and recommendations throughout the development and final array installation.
"This study does an excellent job of describing the process that was undertaken and the partnerships that were created to implement this achievement," said Vice President of Environmental, Health and Safety, Chris Conley. "We are pleased with the outcome of this project and we hope to implement similar sustainable projects in the future."
The development of Aerojet’s solar array farm illustrates how public/private collaborations can launch and deliver on renewable energy initiatives that have an energy-savings impact.
