The General Services Administration of the U.S. government plans to require contractors to track greenhouse gas emissions beginning in 2011 or 2012, according to a report in the Federal Times.
This could have a tremendous effect on a wide range of industries and companies that rely on large government contracts, but do not currently measure their emissions footprint.
The GSA plan adds to increasing pressure from shareholders and environmental groups who insist companies must become more responsible for the environmental effects of their business practices.
Indirectly, this is creating growing demand for carbon accounting software and consulting services.
"The government has enormous leverage. It’s the largest customer in the country. It can move the market to a great extent and be an enormous leader toward sustainability," Cliff Majersik, executive director of the Institute for Market Transformation, told the Federal Times.
