A Massachusetts company may soon receive federal approval to market a breed of Atlantic salmon that has been genetically modified to grow faster, according to an article in The Olympian.
Aquaculture is a $86-billion-a-year industry, and fish farmers are looking for fish that can be ready for the market quckly, as wild fisheries continue to shrink around the planet.
However environmental concerns persist over the impact of fish farms in coastal waters. And fear and uncertainty surround the issue of genetically modified foods, which until now has been limited to crops.
