Arizona regulators approved an energy efficiency plan that is one of the most ambitious in the country.
The Arizona Corporation Commission will require all regulated power companies to reduce electricity sales 22% by 2020.
According to a story in the Arizona Republic, Phoenix-based Arizona Public Service Co., the state’s largest utility, supports the regulation. The company has been a leader in developing renewable energy projects in the state.
However, other companies, including Tucson Electric Power, are said to oppose the measure, stating that they don’t know if they can achieve the goal.
The Southwest Energy Efficiency Project estimates the new regulation will save Arizona utility customers roughly $9 billion over the next decade, while decreasing the need for additional generation capacity.
