Two weeks of United Nations climate talks ended in Bonn, Germany on Friday with a draft text that is meant to facilitate continued negotiations toward a legally binding treaty.
Not surprisingly, both rich and poor nations criticized the text. But the UN’s outgoing climate change secretary Yvo de Boer said negotiators are willing to accept it as a "basis for future work."
Interestingly, the text does not include any mention of the Copenhagen summit or Accord, though it does keep funding commitments develped at the summit last December.
The new text outlines a goal of cutting world emissions of greenhouse gases by at least 50% to 85% from 1990 levels by 2050 and for developed nations to reduce emissions by at least 80% to 95% in the same time period.
The text will be updated before another meeting in Germany in August.
It appears unlikely that a legally binding treaty will be completed this year.
