The White House is getting behind a proposal to spend an additional $6 billion on electric vehicle subsidies, according to a Wall Street Journal story.
The Obama administration and Democratic Congressional leaders are devising a strategy to move forward with energy legislation as a response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. A new Senate bill would establish 15 development communities around the country to receive significant infrastructure funding for electric vehicles.
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers criticized the bill for its narrow focus on electric technologies, which leaves behind other alternative technologies such as fuel cells.
The group also said a wider program is needed to encourage electric vehicle adoption nationwide.
