Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT; 6501.T) and Osaki Electric Co., Ltd. (6644.T) have formed a cooperative alliance to develop products in the smart-grid market.
Hitachi will bring its systems and communications technologies to the collaboration, while Osaki Electric will contribute its experience in meter technologies.
Products and services will encompass everything from smart meters, access and core networks, and systems for the collection and management of meter information, to products in electricity distribution and operating systems fields.
Furthermore, in the future, Hitachi and Osaki Electric will evaluate joint participation in smart grid-related demonstration projects in Japan and overseas, as well as joint development of related equipment and systems.
Hitachi has a long track record and large portfolio of technologies in the fields of power, industrial, information and telecommunications and control systems. In addition to equipment for electricity generation, transmission, conversion and distribution, Hitachi also owns information and telecommunications technologies and control technologies needed for smart grids. These include communications technologies for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), and system stabilization technologies for power grids that will be key to introducing greater amounts of renewable power.
Osaki Electric has been developing electricity meters for more than 60 years, and already sells smart meters in Japan and overseas.
The alliance between Hitachi and Osaki Electric will make possible the provision of integrated AMI-related solutions, which are expected to grow in the future as a core segment in the smart grid business.
