Britain's New Prime Minister Wants 'Greenest Government Ever'

Britain’s new coallition government promised to take quick steps to move the country to a low-carbon economy.

New Prime Minister David Cameron said the central government will cut its carbon dioxide emissions 10% over the next 12 months, according to a Reuters report.

"I don’t want to hear warm words about the environment. I want to see real action. I want this to be the greenest government ever," Cameron told staff at the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

Cameron and his Conservative party appear to be taking up the environmental cause, which was a key element in the election campaign of Liberal Democrats, who joined with conservatives to form a majority coallition after both the Conservative and Labour Parties failed to win a majority.

However, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are likely to but heads over the issue of nuclear power. Conservatives support building new power plants to replace aging reactors, while Lib Dems are against the idea.
