The United Kingdom on Thursday established the world’s largest marine reserve surrounding a group of small islands in the Indian Ocean.
Commercial fishing will be banned in the area, which is home to an estimated 60 endangered species.
The news pleased environmentalists, but angered the islands’ original inhabitants who were exiled to nearby Mauritius in the late 1960s and early 1970s when a military base was established.
The Chagos Islanders hope to return and say commercial fishing will be the primary method of earning a living.
