Researchers have located a massive collection of plastic trash in the Atlantic Ocean similar to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch discovered about a decade ago.
These polluted waters, spanning thousands of square miles of ocean, are cause by large vortex currents which collect floating debris from around the world in an ever-thickening soup of plastic.
After finding the Pacific Garbage Patch, researcher hypothesized that similar patches likely existed in other oceans. Now one has been found between Bermuda and Portugal’s mid-Atlantic Azores islands.
