California Climate Change Law Undermined By Recession

California’s climate change law is under political assault, as the state’s economy struggles in recession and at least one cadidate for governor has promised to suspend the law, if elected.

Four years ago, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a  trail-blazing climate change law that commits the state to an economy-wide cap-and-trade system beginning in 2012. The law aims to reduce California’s greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.

However; according to an Associated Press report, Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, says if she is elected, her first act will be to suspend the law. 

In addition, three Texas-based oil companies are funding a ballot petition to suspend the cap-and-trade program until California’s unemployment rate is reduced by more than half. 

Even Schwarzenegger, who has been driving hard for climate change initiatives, is reportedly taking his foot off the gas.
