The Vancouver Winter games attempted to set the bar high for the greening of future Olympics. But environmentalists say preparations for the 2014 games in Sochi are causing environmental havoc.
The World Wildlife Fund and Greenpeace say ground water is being contaminated, habitats are being erased and construction practices in Russia’s Black Sea resort are subpar.
Both organizations have withdrawn from an oversight commission and are appealing to the UN to force authorities to focus on environmental responsibility.
Environmentalists say the Mzymta River is under the greatest threat. The river connects the two sites to be used for Olympic events.
