The U.S. Renewable Energy Group (US-REG) and A-Power Energy Generation Systems, Ltd. (Nasdaq: APWR) have decided to locate a previously announced wind turbine factory in Nevada.
In addition to supplying the 600-MW wind farm, the 1.1 gigawatt (GW), 320,000 square foot facility will supply projects in North and South America. A-Power plans to finance the costs of site acquisition and plant construction and operation from its own funds.
People were up in arms when a 600 MW wind farm in Texas was to be built from wind turbines manufactured in China, and financed by a Chinese bank. This led to A-Power’s decision to build them in the US instead. The new plant in Nevada is expected to employ 1,000 people and more during the construction process.
The decision is historic – it’s the first time a Chinese manufacturer will build a US factory to supply equipment to a power provider largely funded and managed by Chinese companies.
The companies said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) was instrumental to the decision to locate the new facility there. "Senate Majority Leader Reid’s vision for the development of clean energy industries in his home state, Nevada’s position relative to the major wind corridors, and the strength and sophistication of Nevada’s skilled workforce made Nevada the best option for our headquarters and assembly plant for North and South America," said Mr. Jinxiang Lu, CEO and Chairman of A-Power.
