Radioactive Leaks Draw Attention to Aging Nuclear Reactors in US

Leaks of radioactive tritium have been discovered at 27 of the 104 nuclear reactors in the US, according to an Associated Press story.

The news is raising concerns about the safety of the nation’s aging nuclear reactors, just as the Obama administration prepares to considerably increase support for the development of new nuclear power generation. 

Tritium can cause cancer if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. It was recently measured in groundwater at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant at levels three times higher than the federal safety standard.
