Lockheed Martin Partners with Utilities, MIT

Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) continued its push to enter the smart-grid industry by partnering with several utility companies on projects.

Lockheed announced a partnership with American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) to develop an advanced cyber security operations center to monitor AEP’s gridSMART infrastructure.

Lockheed also said it is partnered with PPL Electric Utilities
(PLEUP.PK), Rappahannock Electric Cooperative and Northern Virginia
Electric Cooperative on similar security solutions.

Lockheed said it also is working with three unnamed utility companies to provide smart grid consulting support and has teamed with another utility to provide program management services for portions of their smart grid deployment.

In August, Pepco Holdings, Inc., (NYSE: POM) awarded Lockheed a three-year contract by to implement energy efficiency and conservation programs and services for non-residential customers in the District of Columbia.

MIT Partnership

In a separate announcement , Lockheed pledged $5 million over five years to a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) research collaboration to "transform how the world combats climate change and produces and consumes energy."

The centerpiece of the collaboration will focus on global climate initiatives, such as carbon modeling and verification and utility-scale energy storage.

With the $5 million pledge, Lockheed has become a Sustaining Member of the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), supporting a portfolio of energy research projects and education at the Institute.
