US Navy Concerned About Offshore Wind Development

Maryland is one of several Mid-Atlantic states looking to add offshore wind power to its energy supply. However, the US Navy expressed concerns last week that large turbines off the coast could conflict with military operations.

In particular, Naval officials told the Maryland Energy Administration and the Department of Business and Economic Development that turbines could interfere with radar monitoring of the coast line, perhaps concealing the presence of actual planes.

They also said wind turbines could disrupt flight and weapon test ranges.

Naval and commercial interests reportedly stated their interests in working together to find compromises. But Todd Morgan, president of the Southern Maryland Navy Alliance, mentioned that the ecoconmic development spurred by offshore wind investment would be offset, if the Navy were to reduce its operations and investments in the region.
