Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE) plans to develop up to 500 megawatts (MW) of solar power on 4,000 acres of land near Phoenix, Arizona, according to a Dow Jones report.
The San Diego-based power company already owns a 10-MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Boulder City, Nevada. First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) built that power plant and is contracted for a second, 48-MW plant nearby.
Sempra CEO and president Michael Allman told Dow Jones the Phoenix development may use both PV and concentrating solar technologies, and that First Solar won’t necessarily be the contractor.
The project could be completed as early as 2012.
