Additional details are available today about a planned "super hub" in New Mexico that will tie together the three U.S. power grids in an effort to allow greater distribution of renewable energy from the Southwest to other regions of the country.
Yesterday we reported that American Superconductor Corporation (Nasdaq: AMSC) would be supplying high temperature superconductor (HTS) wire to the Tres Amigas Project.
Tres Amigas will consist of a triangular underground pathway of superconductor pipelines capable of carrying enough power for 2.5 million homes, according to an Associated Press report.
New Mexico governor Bill Richardson announced the project Tuesday. The first phase is expected to cost about $600 million, and funding has not yet been secured.
