A new solar plant being built in New Jersey will be one of the largest in the Northeast.
MX USA Corp. is building a manufacturing plant in Millville, New Jersey capable of producing 100 MW of cells and panels a year. It should start operations in early 2010.
MX USA Corp is a joint venture between Italian solar firm MX Group S.P.A., which makes polycrystalline solar panels, and IPPsolar, a U.S. start-up that plans to develop, finance, and operate solar power plants in the U.S.
A public/private partnership is financing the plant through Recovery Act funds, the NJ Economic Development Authority and Bureau of Public Utilities, and the City of Millville.
Millville used to be a center for glass manufacturing, making it easy for MX USA to convert a glass manufacturing facility to a solar plant, and to take advantage of a trained workforce.
Governor Jon Corzine of New Jersey said, "New Jersey is positioned to become a manufacturing nexus. We fully support and commend this effort specifically for its creativity in pushing the envelope on the renewable energy imperative, challenging foreign products in price, technology and durability, and celebrating the notion of ‘Made in USA,’ while also creating many US renewable energy jobs."
