India may have broken the deadlock in international climate change negotiations, softening a longstanding demand held by developing nations that rich nations much cut greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2020.
India’s Environment minister Jairam Ramesh told Reuters that 25% might be a more realistic figure. He said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh instructed him to be flexible in order to "make sure there’s an agreement."
This brings India’s emissions targets expectations in line with those proposed by the European Union; however, it is yet to be seen if other developing nations, such as China, Brazil and Indonesia, will follow India’s lead.
In addition, developed nations still must commit to funding levels needed by poor nations to adapt to and mitigate climate change.
