The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) released a series of charts and maps ranking the states by energy production, consumption, price, and carbon dioxide emissions from electric power producers.
In terms of energy use per capita, Alaskans consume the most energy in the US – 1,062 million Btu.
That’s followed by residents of Wyoming, Louisiana, North Dakota, and Texas.
The least energy-intensive per capita states are Rhode Island (206 million Btu), New York, California, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
The worst five states in terms of carbon dioxide emissions by the electric power industry (in metric tons) are Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Indiana while the best five are Vermont, Washington DC, Idaho, Rhode Island, and South Dakota.
Texas’ emissions totaled 255,092,183 metric tons compared to 9,980 metric tons in Vermont.
It’s notable that many of the states that are taking the lead in reducing emissions also produce the least per capita, while the laggards such as Alaska and Wyoming, consume the most energy per capita.
