National Grid received the go-ahead to build 5 MW of solar plants on five of its company-owned sites in Massachusetts.
The Massachusetts Green Communities Act allows utilities to construct, own and operate up to 50 MW of solar plants. Four of the five sites are former brownfields. The $31 million investment will power about 1000 homes.
National Grid also plans to install solar plants on state, municipal, school and commercial properties, with a particular emphasis on schools and communities that are involved with its energy efficiency programs.
The project adds to the 5 MW of distributed solar generation National Grid has already incorporated into the New England electric system. The company recently announced plans for a smart grid pilot in Worcester, Mass.
