Spain cut its subsidies for photovoltaic (PV) power installations last year, contributing to reduced global demand that caused a drop in solar prices this year.
The sunny European country may decide to put a limit on subsidies for concentrating solar power (CSP) as well, according to a Reuters report.
Currently Spain only has 232 megawatts (MW) of installed CSP capacity, but an additional 4.3 gigawatts (GW) are in various stages of construction, meaning the country could easily blow past its goal of 500 MW by 2010.
The country’s generous subsidies for PV solar put taxpayers on the hook for millions of dollars in ongoing payments, and with a growing deficit the government might decide to take early action to avoid a similar situation with CSP subsidies.
