U.S. Has Arctic Responsibilities

A recent opinion piece in The Seattle Times discusses why, as an Arctic nation, the U.S. must embrace smart, science-based stewardship.

The piece was co-written by Nancy Sutley, chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality; Jane Lubchenco, undersecretary for Commerce of Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator; and Adm. Thad Allen, commandant of the Coast Guard.

The writers state their support for the U.N. Convention on Law of the Sea and push for "strategy, policies and adequate federal resources" to manage increasingly accessible arctic resources.
