Activists across the country on Friday demonstrated their displeasure with car-centric urban planning by setting up mini parks in parking spaces in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.
The parks ranged from single spots transformed with sod an lawnchairs to larger stretches with grills and entertainment.
The PARK(ing) Day movement began in San Francisco four years ago, and this year included participants in more than 100 cities on four continents.
Cities around the country are experimenting with closing stretches of downtown streets to create pedestrian malls. In 2008, New York City began closing off sections of Broadway to traffic during the summer to create temporary, linear, in-town parks.
