Plans for "big" renewable energy projects have shifted from tens of megawatts (MW) to hundreds of MW over the last two years as the industry has begun to move into the mainstream.
As a result, the world’s largest engineering and construction firms are needed to develop these massive solar plants and wind farms, according to a Reuters report.
The same firms that have made their fortunes building coal-fired power plants and nuclear power plants are the only ones with the capacity to handle these projects, the report states.
For instance, solar thermal company BrightSource Energy recently selected Bechtel as its engineering and construction contractor of hundreds of MW of planned solar thermal plants in California.
Next year is expected to be a record year for the development of
clean energy projects as worldwide stimulus funding begins to reach the
shovel-in-the-dirt stage.
In addition to Bechtel, the services of Fluor Corp (NYSE: FLR) and Jacobs Engineering Group (NYSE: JEC) are likely to be in high demand, according to Reuters.
