U.S. Prohibits Arctic Fishing

U.S. commerce secretary Richard Locke last week approved the Arctic Fishery Management Plan prohibiting expanded fishing in the the Arctic. 

Vast expanses of Arctic waters are opening up as climate change melts sea ice surrounding the North Pole. The Management Plan takes a cautious approach, banning industrial fishing until researchers can gather information about fish stocks in these waters. 

Locke said the goal is to establish a sustainable fishing plan that will preserve the overall health of the Arctic ecosystem, according to an Associated Press report.
