NY Sets Emissions Goal for 2050

New York Governor David A. Paterson signed an executive order Thursday that sets a goal for reducing the state’s greenhouse gas emissions 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.

That level matches what climate scientists say is needed to avert the worst effects of climate change.

The order also calls for the creation of a climate action plan by September 2010 that creates a roadmap for reaching the 2050 goal. The plan will be written by a climate action council consisting of the heads of state agencies and organizations such as the Long Island Power Authority.

“Climate change is the most pressing environmental issue of our time. By taking action, we send a signal that New Yorkers will do our share to address the climate crisis and we will do it in a way that creates opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship to flourish,” Governor Paterson said.
