Montreal's BIXI Bike Share Is Heading to Boston

The Public Bike System Co., founded in Montreal, Canada, has been granted a mandate to set up and operate a bike share program in central Boston based on its popular BIXI sytem in Montreal.

Boston officials reportedly hope to confirm plans for 2,500 bikes, 290 stations and 3,750 docking points in Central Boston, with the potential to expand to a 5,000-bike system and expand into the communities of Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville.

The BIXI system allows riders to rend a bike by swiping a credit card. It can returned to any other BIXI docking point. Riders in Montreal also have numerous subscription options ranging from $78 for a year to $5 for a single day.

Public Bike chairman Roger Plamondon said his company would cover the cost of setting up the system in Boston.

London also announced that it will be working with the BIXI model, granting a contract to the London-based group Serco, in association with BIXI. The London project envisions a network of 6,000 bikes, 400 docking stations and 10,000 docking points that will be in service by 2010.
