The United States is falling behind in the race to dominate the cleantech industry of the future, according to an op-ed piece published in the Washington Post Monday by two industry heavyweights.
Venture capitalist John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Beyers, and GE CEO Jeff Immelt write that there is "no topic of greater importance to America’s economic future."
The two assert that China is currently winning the race, calling the country’s committment to clean energy technologies and markets "breathtaking."
The U.S. is home to only one of the largest wind turbine makers, one of the largest solar manufacturers and two of the top-ten advanced battery companies.
The U.S. government’s energy and climate policies are the principal obstacle to overcome, Doerr and Immelt said, and they outline five basic policy changes that are needed.
